Certificate Signing Request
A request containing a public key and identity, submitted to a CA to obtain a certificate.
A CSR is a structured message that an applicant sends to a CA to request a certificate, containing the public key and identifying details such as the common name and organization. It is signed with the corresponding private key to prove possession, while that private key itself never leaves the requester. The CA validates the request and, if approved, issues a signed certificate. Errors in the subject fields or domain validation are common reasons a request is rejected before issuance.
