Internet Protocol Security
A suite that authenticates and encrypts IP traffic, used for VPNs.
IPSec secures traffic at the network layer using two main protocols: AH for integrity and authentication, and ESP, which adds confidentiality through encryption. It operates in transport mode for host to host protection or tunnel mode for gateway VPNs that wrap the entire original packet. Key exchange is handled by IKE. Because it protects at layer 3, it shields all upper layer protocols transparently, unlike TLS, which secures individual application sessions.
