Local Area Network
A network covering a small area such as an office or building.
A LAN connects devices within a limited area such as a floor, office, or building, typically under one administrative domain with high speed links. Its boundaries shape security design, since internal traffic is often more trusted than external traffic, an assumption that zero trust architecture deliberately rejects. Segmentation with VLANs limits lateral movement if one host is compromised. A LAN contrasts with a WAN, which spans larger geographic distances and crosses provider networks.
