Simple Object Access Protocol
An XML-based messaging protocol for web services.
SOAP is a protocol for exchanging structured information in web services using XML envelopes, typically over HTTP, with formal contracts defined in WSDL. It supports built in standards such as WS-Security for message level signing and encryption, making it common in enterprise and legacy integrations. Because it parses XML, implementations can be vulnerable to XML external entity and injection attacks if input is not validated. Contrast SOAP, which is rigid and standards heavy, with REST, which is lighter and resource oriented.
