Time-based One-Time Password
A one-time code derived from the current time and a shared secret.
TOTP generates short lived one time codes by combining a shared secret with the current time in fixed intervals, commonly used in authenticator apps for multifactor authentication. Because each code expires quickly, captured values have limited replay value. It contrasts with HOTP, which advances a counter rather than a clock and so does not expire on a timer. Clock drift between the device and server is the typical cause of TOTP validation failures.
