Data Execution Prevention
A memory protection that marks regions non-executable to block code injection.
Data Execution Prevention marks memory regions such as the stack and heap as non-executable so injected code cannot run from data pages. It raises the cost of classic buffer overflow exploits and is often paired with Address Space Layout Randomization. Attackers respond with techniques like return-oriented programming, so DEP is one layer of memory protection rather than a complete defense.
