MBR
Master Boot Record
The first sector of a legacy-partitioned disk that holds boot code and the partition table.
The MBR sits in the first sector of a BIOS-style disk and contains the initial bootstrap code plus the partition table that tells firmware where the operating system lives. Bootkit malware targets the MBR so it can load before the operating system and evade defenses, which is why Secure Boot and the newer GPT and UEFI scheme were introduced. The MBR is limited to disks up to 2 TB and four primary partitions. On the exam, link MBR infection to boot-level persistence and the move to UEFI Secure Boot as the mitigation.
Looking MBR up is step one. Getting tested on it is step two.
