Data Encryption Standard
An obsolete 56-bit symmetric cipher, broken by modern brute force.
The Data Encryption Standard is a symmetric block cipher with a 56-bit key that is now considered broken because modern hardware can brute force it quickly. It was extended by Triple DES as a stopgap and ultimately replaced by AES. On the exam DES is the classic example of a deprecated algorithm that must be retired.
