The Extensible Authentication Protocol is a flexible authentication framework rather than a single method, used heavily in 802.1X port-based access control and enterprise wireless. Variants such as EAP-TLS, PEAP, and EAP-TTLS carry credentials inside a TLS tunnel, with EAP-TLS using mutual certificates as the strongest option. It runs between the supplicant and the authentication server, relayed by the authenticator.
