MFP

Multifunction Printer

A networked printer with scanning and faxing; an often-overlooked attack surface.

A multifunction printer adds scanning, copying, and faxing to a networked printer and shares the same risk profile as any embedded device with storage and network services. Attackers can use it to capture print jobs, pivot deeper into the network, or exfiltrate scanned documents through email or stored copies. Common protections include disabling unused protocols, enforcing authentication for printing, securing the management interface, and clearing nonvolatile memory at end of life. Like the MFD, it is an attack surface that defenders often forget to inventory.
