IoT refers to internet connected sensors, appliances, and embedded controllers that gather or act on data outside traditional computing. They expand the attack surface because many ship with default credentials, infrequent patching, and weak update mechanisms. Compromised devices have been recruited into large botnets used for denial of service. Mitigations include network segmentation, disabling unused services, and changing default passwords, since these devices often cannot run conventional endpoint protection.
