Personal Identity Verification is a United States federal smart card standard, defined under FIPS 201, that stores certificates and credentials for strong authentication and physical or logical access. The card serves as a possession factor and typically pairs with a PIN, enabling multifactor authentication for government personnel. It supports digital signing and encryption through its embedded certificates. The closely related Department of Defense equivalent is the Common Access Card, and both reduce reliance on weaker password-only logins.
