Cyclic Redundancy Check
An error-detecting code that checks data integrity in transit or storage.
A CRC is an error detecting code that computes a check value over data so a receiver can verify the content was not accidentally altered in transit or storage. It is widely used in network frames and storage systems to catch transmission noise and corruption efficiently. It protects against random errors only, not deliberate tampering, because an attacker who changes the data can recompute a matching CRC. For integrity against malicious modification, cryptographic hashes or message authentication codes are required.
