CVE

Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures

A standardized identifier for a publicly known vulnerability.

Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures is a public catalog that assigns a unique identifier, such as CVE-2024-12345, to each known software flaw so tools and teams reference the same issue without ambiguity. A CVE entry describes the weakness but does not by itself rate severity, which is the job of CVSS. Vulnerability scanners and patch reports key off CVE IDs to track exposure across an environment.
