Internet Message Access Protocol
A protocol for retrieving and managing email on a server.
Internet Message Access Protocol retrieves and manages email while leaving messages on the server, synchronizing folders and read state across multiple devices. Its security concern is that legacy or misconfigured use can transmit credentials and mail in cleartext, so it should run over TLS as a core mail access method. The exam contrast is POP3, which typically downloads and removes mail from the server, suiting single device use, while IMAP suits multi device access. Note that IMAP retrieves mail, whereas SMTP sends it.
