Post Office Protocol
A protocol for downloading email from a server to a client.
Post Office Protocol retrieves email from a mail server to a client, and by default it downloads messages and removes them from the server, fitting a single-device usage model. The current version is POP3. Because the original protocol transmits credentials and messages in cleartext, it should be secured with TLS, often referred to as POP3S. The key contrast is with IMAP, which keeps mail on the server and synchronizes state across multiple devices rather than pulling it down once.
