A hardware identifier for a network interface; spoofable to bypass filtering.
A MAC address is a hardware identifier burned into a network interface and used for delivery within a local segment at layer 2. Although meant to be unique, it can be changed in software, so MAC filtering offers only weak access control and is easily bypassed by spoofing an allowed value. Attackers also use MAC spoofing to impersonate devices or evade tracking. This media access control meaning is distinct from mandatory access control and the message authentication code.
