Object Identifier
A globally unique identifier used in certificates and directory schemas.
An Object Identifier is a globally unique, hierarchical numeric label used to name objects in standards, certificates, and directory schemas. In PKI, OIDs identify items such as certificate policies, extended key usages, and algorithm parameters so that diverse systems interpret fields consistently. Their structured namespace prevents collisions because each branch is delegated to a registering authority. Recognizing OIDs helps when examining certificate extensions, for example to confirm whether a certificate is approved for server authentication or code signing.
