Public Key Infrastructure is the framework of certificate authorities, registration authorities, certificates, and policies that binds public keys to verified identities and manages their lifecycle. It enables trust for TLS, code signing, email security, and authentication at scale. Core processes include issuance, renewal, and revocation through mechanisms such as CRLs and OCSP. The trust model is hierarchical and rooted in trusted CAs, which contrasts with the decentralized web of trust used by PGP for validating keys.
