Point-to-Point Protocol
A protocol for direct connections between two network nodes.
Point-to-Point Protocol establishes a direct data link between two nodes and provides framing, link negotiation, and optional authentication for connections such as dial-up and certain VPN tunnels. It supports authentication methods including PAP, which sends credentials in cleartext, and CHAP, which uses a challenge and response to avoid transmitting the password directly. Understanding that CHAP is preferred over PAP for confidentiality is a common exam point. PPP also underlies tunneling protocols like PPTP and L2TP.
