An obsolete VPN protocol with known cryptographic weaknesses.
Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol is an early VPN protocol that encapsulates PPP frames to create a tunnel across an IP network. It is now considered obsolete because its authentication and encryption, particularly MS-CHAPv2, have well-documented cryptographic weaknesses that allow recovery of credentials. As a result it should not be used to protect sensitive traffic. More secure replacements include IPsec-based tunnels, L2TP over IPsec, and modern options such as SSL/TLS VPNs and protocols like IKEv2.
