Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol
An obsolete protocol for securing individual web messages, superseded by HTTPS over TLS.
S-HTTP was an early approach to securing individual HTTP messages, but it lost out to HTTPS, which wraps the whole HTTP session in TLS. The two are easy to confuse: HTTPS is HTTP over TLS and is the standard today, while S-HTTP is a deprecated, rarely seen alternative. Knowing the distinction helps avoid a common exam trap. For any modern scenario the correct answer for protecting web traffic is HTTPS with current TLS, not S-HTTP.
