HTTP is the request and response protocol for the web and transmits data in cleartext by default on port 80, so credentials, cookies, and page content can be read or modified by anyone on the path. This exposure enables eavesdropping, session hijacking, and content injection on untrusted networks. It matters as the foundation of web communication. The exam contrast is HTTPS, which wraps HTTP in TLS for confidentiality and integrity; best practice is to redirect HTTP to HTTPS and enforce it with HSTS.
