HTTP secured with TLS on port 443.

HTTPS secures web traffic by carrying HTTP inside a TLS session on port 443, providing confidentiality, integrity, and server authentication through certificates validated against trusted certificate authorities. It defends against eavesdropping and on path tampering that plague plain HTTP. It matters for protecting credentials, sessions, and sensitive data in transit. A common pitfall is assuming the padlock proves a site is safe: HTTPS only protects the channel and confirms the certificate, not that the operator is legitimate, since phishing sites can also obtain valid certificates.
