FTP wrapped in TLS for encrypted file transfer.
FTPS secures traditional FTP by wrapping its control and data channels in TLS, providing encryption and certificate based authentication for file transfer. It preserves the FTP command structure, which means it inherits the use of separate control and data connections that can complicate firewall and NAT traversal. The key exam distinction is from SFTP, which is an entirely separate protocol tunneled over SSH on a single connection. FTPS relies on certificates and a PKI trust hierarchy, whereas SFTP authenticates through SSH keys or passwords.
