File Transfer Protocol
A legacy file transfer protocol that sends credentials and data in cleartext.
FTP is a legacy protocol for transferring files between hosts that transmits commands, credentials, and data in cleartext, leaving everything exposed to sniffing and on path interception. Because of this lack of confidentiality it is unsuitable for sensitive transfers on untrusted networks. The exam expects awareness of secure replacements: FTPS adds a TLS layer to FTP, while SFTP runs file transfer over SSH and is a distinct protocol. Recognizing that SFTP and FTPS are different despite similar names is a common test point.
