SDN decouples the control plane, which decides where traffic goes, from the data plane, which forwards it, allowing centralized programmable management of the network through controllers and APIs. This enables rapid policy changes and automation but concentrates risk, since a compromised controller could affect the entire fabric. The exam contrasts the planes and notes that protecting the controller and its northbound and southbound interfaces is essential to keeping a software defined network trustworthy.
