SMTP secured with TLS.
SMTPS protects mail submission and server to server transfer by wrapping SMTP in a TLS encrypted channel, guarding credentials and message contents against eavesdropping and tampering in transit. It is commonly implemented through implicit TLS on a dedicated submission port or through STARTTLS, which upgrades an existing plaintext SMTP session. Without it, mail traverses networks in clear text. On the exam, distinguish transport encryption like SMTPS, which secures the connection, from authenticity controls such as SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, which validate the sender.
