SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol

A protocol for monitoring and managing network devices.

SNMP lets administrators monitor and configure routers, switches, printers, and servers by polling values and receiving asynchronous trap notifications. Versions 1 and 2c are insecure because they pass community strings as clear text, effectively unencrypted passwords that attackers can sniff or guess, and default strings like public and private are a frequent finding. SNMPv3 adds authentication and encryption and should be preferred. The exam emphasizes hardening SNMP by disabling old versions and replacing default credentials.
