Transport Layer Security
The standard protocol for encrypting network connections.
TLS provides confidentiality, integrity, and authentication for data in transit and is the successor to the deprecated SSL protocol. It underpins HTTPS and many other secure channels by negotiating a cipher suite and exchanging certificates during a handshake. Proper deployment requires disabling weak versions and validating certificates against a trusted chain. A frequent exam point is that TLS 1.2 and 1.3 are current, while SSL and early TLS versions are considered insecure.
