VLSM

Variable Length Subnet Masking

Subnetting with masks of differing lengths for efficient address use.

VLSM applies subnet masks of differing lengths to blocks carved from one network, matching each subnet to the number of hosts it actually needs and conserving address space. It also supports efficient route summarization. From a security perspective, tighter subnetting enables more precise segmentation and access control boundaries. It contrasts with fixed length subnetting, which forces every subnet to the same size and wastes addresses regardless of the hosts present.
