VPN

Virtual Private Network

An encrypted tunnel that extends a private network across a public one.

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel that protects the confidentiality and integrity of traffic crossing untrusted networks, supporting remote access for users or site to site links between locations. Common implementations use IPsec or TLS. A key design choice is split tunneling versus full tunneling: split tunneling sends only corporate traffic through the tunnel for performance, while full tunneling routes everything for inspection at the cost of added load. VPN gateways remain a frequent target for credential theft.
