Internet Protocol
The core protocol for addressing and routing packets across networks.
IP provides logical addressing and best effort packet delivery that lets data traverse interconnected networks. It is connectionless and does not guarantee ordering or reliability, which is why transport protocols layer on top of it. Security relevance centers on spoofing, where forged source addresses hide an attacker, and on the differences between IPv4 and IPv6. IP addresses are routable, whereas MAC addresses operate only within a local segment.
