Carrying voice calls over IP networks.
VoIP carries voice calls as packets over IP networks rather than traditional circuit switched lines, reducing cost and enabling unified communications. Because calls traverse data networks, they inherit risks such as eavesdropping, call interception, and denial of service, and signaling abuse can enable toll fraud. Protecting media and signaling with encryption and segmenting voice traffic onto its own VLAN are common controls. It links to SIP based signaling and the broader convergence of voice and data.
