IaaS

Infrastructure as a Service

A cloud model providing virtual machines, storage, and networking.

Infrastructure as a service delivers virtual machines, storage, and networking on demand, leaving the customer responsible for the operating system, runtime, applications, and data while the provider secures the underlying hardware and hypervisor. This split follows the shared responsibility principle, and IaaS places the most duty on the customer of the common cloud service tiers. It matters for correctly assigning patching and configuration tasks. Contrast it with PaaS and SaaS, where the provider progressively assumes more of the stack and the customer manages less.
