Inspects traffic inline and blocks detected threats.
An IPS sits inline in the traffic path and can actively drop, reset, or quarantine connections that match known attack signatures or anomalous behavior. This is its key contrast with an IDS, which only observes a copy of traffic and raises alerts without blocking. Because it acts in real time, tuning matters: an overly aggressive signature set can drop legitimate sessions, so baselining and careful policy testing are essential.
