Inspects network traffic inline and blocks threats.
A network based intrusion prevention system inspects traffic inline and can actively block, drop, or reset connections it judges malicious, providing enforcement rather than just alerting. Being inline means it can stop attacks in real time, but it also introduces a potential point of latency or failure and risks blocking legitimate traffic if tuned poorly. Careful rule tuning and fail open or fail closed planning are important. The contrast with NIDS is placement and action: prevention is inline and active, detection is passive.
