Network-based Intrusion Detection System
Monitors network traffic for malicious activity and alerts.
A network based intrusion detection system passively monitors traffic, often from a span port or tap, to identify suspicious or malicious activity and raise alerts. Because it is out of band and detection only, it does not block attacks, so it adds visibility without risk of interrupting legitimate traffic. It relies on signatures, anomalies, or behavioral baselines, and its blind spot is encrypted traffic it cannot inspect. The key contrast is with NIPS, which sits inline and can actively drop malicious traffic.
