MPLS

Multiprotocol Label Switching

A high-performance routing technique using labels rather than addresses.

MPLS forwards traffic using short path labels rather than performing a full routing table lookup at each hop, which speeds delivery and supports traffic engineering and quality of service across a provider network. It is widely used for reliable site to site connectivity in enterprise WANs. MPLS provides separation between customers but is not encrypted by itself, so confidentiality still requires a VPN over the link. Many organizations now blend or replace it with SD-WAN to cut cost and add flexibility.
