Mean time between failures is the average operational time between failures of a repairable system, used as a reliability metric in availability and resilience planning. A higher value indicates a more dependable component and informs maintenance schedules and redundancy decisions. It pairs with mean time to repair to estimate expected uptime and downtime. The key contrast is with MTTF, which applies to items that are replaced rather than repaired, so MTBF assumes the system is returned to service after each failure.
