RTO

Recovery Time Objective

The maximum acceptable time to restore a function after disruption.

RTO sets the target window for bringing a process or system back online after an outage, driving choices about backups, redundancy, and failover sites. It is a core output of business impact analysis and shapes how much recovery capability an organization funds. Exam takers should not confuse it with RPO, which defines how much data loss is tolerable measured backward from the incident, whereas RTO measures forward toward restoration of service.
