Encrypting File System
A Windows feature that encrypts individual files and folders.
EFS is a Windows feature that transparently encrypts individual files and folders on NTFS volumes, tying the encryption keys to the user account so other accounts cannot read the data. This provides granular, per user protection useful on shared systems, unlike whole volume approaches. The common contrast on the exam is BitLocker, which performs full disk encryption to protect everything at rest, including system files. A key EFS pitfall is recovery: if the user keys or certificates are lost without a recovery agent configured, the encrypted files become unrecoverable.
