Self-Encrypting Drive
A drive that automatically encrypts data in hardware.
A SED performs full disk encryption in dedicated hardware, so data is automatically protected at rest without burdening the host processor. Because the media encryption key never leaves the drive and can be erased instantly, a cryptographic erase renders all stored data unrecoverable in seconds, simplifying secure decommissioning. It contrasts with software encryption like host based volume tools, offering transparent performance, though proper authentication and key management remain necessary to realize the benefit.
