FDE

Full Disk Encryption

Encryption of an entire drive so data is protected at rest.

FDE encrypts an entire storage volume so that data at rest is unreadable without the proper key, protecting against theft or loss of a device. It commonly binds the key to a TPM and a user credential so the disk only decrypts on trusted hardware. Because protection applies only while the device is powered off or locked, it does not defend against malware running on an unlocked, booted system. It contrasts with file or folder level encryption, which protects selected items rather than the whole drive.
