PII

Personally Identifiable Information

Data that can identify a specific individual.

Personally Identifiable Information is any data that can identify a specific person, either alone or when combined with other information, such as name, government identifier, or biometric records. Protecting it is central to privacy laws like GDPR and to organizational data classification programs. Practical controls include encryption, masking, tokenization, and strict access limits. A common exam distinction is that PHI is health-related PII under HIPAA, while PII is the broader umbrella category covering all identifying personal data.
