An intermediate distribution frame is a wiring closet that aggregates cabling from nearby end devices and connects it back to the main distribution frame, extending connectivity across floors or buildings. Because it concentrates network access in one spot, physical security matters: an unlocked IDF lets an intruder tap cabling, add rogue devices, or disrupt service. It supports structured cabling design and availability. The exam contrast is the MDF, which is the central facility point, while IDFs are the distributed satellite closets feeding it.
