Main Distribution Frame
The central wiring point where external lines meet internal cabling.
The MDF is the primary wiring termination point in a building where external carrier lines connect to the internal cabling that fans out, often through intermediate distribution frames, to work areas. Because it concentrates connectivity, physical security matters: unauthorized access could enable wiretaps, disconnections, or rogue device insertion. Controls include locked rooms, access logging, and environmental protection. The MDF is a physical infrastructure concept, contrasted with the IDF closets that serve individual floors or zones.
