A VM is a software emulated computer that runs a guest operating system on virtualized hardware managed by a hypervisor, allowing many isolated systems on one host. It enables snapshots, rapid provisioning, and sandboxing of suspicious code. Security concerns include VM escape, where a compromised guest breaks the hypervisor boundary to reach the host or other guests, and unmanaged VM sprawl that leaves instances unpatched. Host hardening and strong isolation are the primary defenses.
